چکیده

USE OF HIGH-FLUX, preformed ultrafiltration membranes (Diaflo; Amicon Corp., Lexington, Mass.) for separating microand macromolecular constituents of biological fluids has been adequately documented (1-3). A class of these membranes has been formulated into a cone configuration (Centriflo; Amicon Corp.) amenable for use in a laboratory centrifuge. These membranes, highly retentive for the serum protein components, permit passage of low molecular-weight moieties and ionic species. Since isolation of the diffusible (nonproteinbound) calcium fraction of serum by more conventional ultrafiltration is laborious and must be done under rigorous control, the Centriflo membrane was evaluated for its applicability to this separation.

Rapid method for determining ultrafiltrable calcium in serum.

Methods for determining ultrafiltrable calcium in serum (UFCa) are comprehensive and time-consuming because pH must be strictly controlled, either by anaerobic technique throughout the process or by saturating the sera with C02-02 mixtures. Farese et al. (1) reported a simple method for separating diffusible calcium in serum by centrifugation through high-flux ultrafiltration membranes. Anaerob...

Ultracentrifugal Analysis of Protein-bound and Free Calcium* in Human Serumt

In 1911, Rona and Takahashi (1) demonstrated by means of dialysis that only a portion of the calcium in serum is diffusible through a semipermeable membrane. Since then, a number of methods have been developed for the separation and measurement of diffusible calcium. Collodion bags, introduced by Walpole in 1915 (2), were employed by Cushny for ultrafiltration of serum (3), and later modified f...

Non-diffusible serum-calcium at various calcium, phosphate and hydrogen ion concentrations.

THE study of the diffusibility of blood serum-calcium has been an interesting development in the investigation of calcium metabolism. The finding of Rona and Takahashi [1911], that only a part of the serum-calcium was diffusible through membranes impermeable to protein, has been corroborated by many observers and by various methods. The figures for diffusibility recorded in the literature cover...

The Condition of the Inorganic Phosphorus of the Blood with Special Reference to the Calcium Concentration

The effective concentration of any constituent of the blood stream is determined not only by its total concentration as given by chemical analysis, but rather by its concentration in an active form. Hence, the condition of the constituents of the blood is of paramount importance and has been the subject of many investigations in recent years. The condition of the inorganic phosphorus of the blo...
